History Extra - Wallasey
The pictures of Wallasey were taken when
Joe & Rob came Second with 47 points in their Seniors Open, but
it is more famous for other pictures.
The pictures in their Clubhouse are very special.
The one of Bobby Jones is the only signed portrait of him that is known.
Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters, tried to buy the portrait
as Jones was a co-founder of Augusta National. Clearly Wallasey decided,
I am pleased to say, not to sell.
The other portrait is of Dr Frank Stableford, inventor of the famous
golf scoring system. There is some debate about it, but a plaque on
the 2nd tee says that is where he thought of the idea. We pondered that
it might have been after a 10 on the first !!
